BOTH/AND

A Visual & Philosophical Exploration of History

I post essays roughly twice a week, blending history, philosophy, and art into deep explorations of the past and present. Each post is illustrated with my own photography, documenting over a thousand historical sites and museums from across the world.

I study history as a philosophical practice, always searching for the big picture and often through comparative analysis. How do different cultures and eras shape their environments, beliefs, and artistic expressions? What patterns emerge when we examine the connections between different ideas and places, built environments and belief systems, the art and the societies that produced them? Understanding these historical currents helps us see how they shape us, and how we might use that knowledge to shape the future.

Current Projects

  • The Gothic World — As part of a book I am working on about Gothic architecture, every Saturday this year I am posting a countdown of the Fifty Greatest Works of Gothic Architecture. These posts, and more, are over at my sister publication, The Gothic World — if that is all you want to see, just subscribe to it.

  • Museum Mondays — Short reads showcasing the world’s most interesting museums and historical sites, and what they reveal about our shared humanity.

  • The Long View — Explorations of patterns, connections, and philosophical insights across time and cultures, examining everything from media revolutions to religious developments to watershed historical moments.

My most in-depth explorations happen here, but I also regularly share photos on two instagram accounts:

Implicate Orders

I am also currently publishing a 46-chapter piece of serialized speculative fiction — a future history called Implicate Orders.

If you are into speculative fiction, philosophical thrillers, heady sci-fi — if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if all Black Mirror episodes connected into one long mythic history — then you should definitely check it out.
